History says that early civilizations are assumed to have so little in terms of properties that they are fully packed and ready to go in one day. That’s the result of being carefree drifters then. After all, who would still have strength to travel for long periods to reach an unfamiliar destination after packing up for days?

No, previous civilizations were probably practical. They kept what they needed and the rest, they could have divided with those who had less. They had no need for self-storage then.

So how did self-storage, with its concept being so popular today, hit mankind?

Its beginnings have diverse historical accounts, depending on the areas. Chinese ancestors used to store their own items in clay pots before the containers with valued belongings were buried underground and kept monitored to make sure that nobody got hold of them. They had practiced this for more than 6,000 years.

The British, on the other hand, had a different way to keep their valuables safe and secure. To protect their valuables, British dignitaries hid them in banks, which hired moving firms to protect their items.

Self-storage for the firms then meant putting these precious items in crates and hiding them in secure lofts or stables. They even placed watchmen on guard.

Those were then. Wouldn’t it be funny if we were to dig up clay pots every time we want access to our things? Securing valuables and other treasured possessions in the past posed quite a challenge to the owner and needed many people. It appeared rather tough to retrieve these hidden possessions, but it might just be a feature to deter thieves from even trying.

Self-storage today is easier because of the concept developed by Odessa, Texas native Russ Williams, who was involved in the oil industry. The fishing enthusiast had marveled where he could keep his boat and his fishing gear stored.

Williams then purchased several garages and apartments, which he leased to other businesses in the oil industry. This was how self-storage came today.

Many people are taking advantage of the space-saving benefits of self-storage. It is now a rising need, with people incessantly getting new things but not having enough living spaces to hold their possessions. It has become a requirement for those who need a facility distinguish from their places to store their possessions.
